Why Oral Cancer Screening Matters?
Oral cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable cancers when detected early, yet many people are diagnosed only after the disease has reached an advanced stage. In its early stages, oral cancer often develops silently, causing little or no pain, making regular screening essential—especially for individuals with risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, or prolonged sun exposure to the lips. A simple, painless oral examination can identify suspicious ulcers, red or white patches, lumps, or other abnormal changes before they become serious. Early detection not only improves treatment outcomes and survival rates but also reduces the need for extensive treatment, helping individuals maintain a better quality of life. Regular oral cancer screening is a proactive step towards protecting your long-term oral and overall health.
Is oral cancer screening painful?
No. Oral cancer screening is a quick, safe, and non-invasive examination. It is generally painless and includes a quick & easy scan of the mouth cavity to detect any lesions or early signs of oral cancer or other abnormalities.
How long does it take? Do I need to fast?
Oral cancer screening usually takes 3-4 minutes, It is recommended to not eat or drink 2 hours prior to the test. It is a quick, simple, and convenient examination that can be completed during your regular health screening.
Can dentists detect oral cancer?
Yes. Dentists can identify early signs of oral cancer during routine examinations and recommend further evaluation if needed.
Can oral cancer occur without tobacco use?
Yes. Although tobacco is a major risk factor, oral cancer can also occur due to alcohol use, HPV infection, prolonged sun exposure, genetics, or other factors.
How often should I get screened? What if an abnormality is found?
High-risk individuals should undergo annual oral cancer screening. If an abnormality is detected, our team will explain the findings and recommend appropriate follow-up tests or referral for further evaluation.
