Latent TB Screening

Latent TB Screening

The challenge with regular TB screenings is that BCG vaccinated individuals return a false positive test result with the prevalent testing methods causing a trust deficit & low compliance to screening programmes.

Prevalence

One sputum positive patient can infect 10–15 persons each year if left untreated. Poorly treated patients can develop drug resistance and potentially incurable forms of TB.

~40% Latent TB of which, 10% become active cases.

Cost

Reduced productivity in the form of income loss and treatment costs are estimated to be around Rs.61,181 per patient.

Average 7–9 weeks delay from symptom onset to treatment initiation which was double the generally accepted delay of 4 weeks

Solution

Delay from symptom onset to treatment initiation may cause catastrophical expenditures for a patient’s family apart from several visits. Despite not showing any apparent symptoms, people may have infectious TB and may even be transmitting it. Population screening for TB is essential.
